About The Campaign
ABOUT KATHPUTLI COLONY
Kathputli Colony, a slum in West Delhi that is home to several generations of traditional folk artists. The families, which consist of acrobats, puppeteers, folk musicians, dancers, snake charmers, sculptors, magicians, painters and bioscope makers, among others, settled here from different parts of the country almost four decades ago. In 2014, the tensions between the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the residents of the colony were at an all-time high. The DDA, which has partnered with the real estate company Raheja Developers, was trying to get the residents to move to transit camps at Anand Parbat, as part of its ‘in-situ slum rehabilitation scheme’. The promise made to the residents was that once the colony was vacated, the construction of multi-storied buildings would begin, with modern flats set aside for them. Kathputli is also home to many daily wage construction site workers, rickshaw pullers, domestic help, rag pickers from leprosy community who earn on a day to day basis.
PROBLEM DURING COVID-19 CRISIS
(This article written by Revati Laul in The Quint sums up the problem well!)
The colony is home to 2800 families living in transit camps out of which 700 families have been identified who struggle to meet their everyday food needs as well. This is the peak time for artists to earn their living in the season of weddings and cultural performances. All the gatherings have been cancelled due to Covid-19 where artists are left unpaid challenging their financial stability to survive in times to meet just the basic needs of food, water, and health. At the same time, the daily wage workers have been hit hard to manage even 2 square meals while they are not earnings anything as well as their without any means to support their family.
